Database of countries/cities worldwide

I'd like to find a database with all the worldwide countries/states and major cities if anyone can direct me. I've searched everywhere and can only find meridianworlddata.com which charges a nice fee of $1000 for this info (mind you they are all GPS too). If anyone knows where I can get this type of database or list I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hey...even I was looking for the same sometime back. YOu got two options - either get the data from geobytes.com and compile the database yourself OR purchase a relatively low budget WebLocations countries and cities database from salpure.com . Although I purchased, but if u r good at programming then get the free one. choice is yours.
